The ever present question… How do I rank my website to be in the first position on Google when someone does a search for what I offer? There are a lot of methods but today the algorithm has shifted in one very specific way.

Google’s Algorithm Update

Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results. Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices.

This means if you don’t currently have a responsive website you will lose rank in the SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages) starting today (April 21st, 2015).

More and more people are using their mobile devices to find content online. This algorithm change will help accommodate a growing audience of mobile users. If you own a website it’s imperative that you have a responsive website to ensure a better user experience (UX) for your visitors. Offering a better UX for your visitors will not only help with conversions, ranking too!

What is Responsive?

When we started using CSS3 several years ago we at Spark Logix Studios were pioneers in responsive website design. Today, it’s pretty common place (and we’re thankful). Browsers, devices and operating systems have caught up with the technology.

A responsive website simply put is a set of visible elements on a page that adjust and adapt to the screen size it’s being displayed on. There’s no need for a bulky “mobile site”. A responsive web build will display right the first time and work beautifully (as it should) on all devices.

A responsive website is now a definitive ranking factor for Google, having one WILL help you rank higher in the SERPs!

What Google’s Responsive Website Algorithm Update Means

This algorithm update is a worthy attempt to better the experience for those visiting the web to find information. With the rise of mobile use in search and web consumption, this is an overdue update. Your attempt to make your visitor’s experience just right on your website will now pay off in the area of ranking your website too. It’s certainly not the only factor in ranking a website but rest assured, a good UX will pay off in more ways than one now.
